Hi, I’m Karley Ziegler Mott, and I’ve spent more than 30 years in the beauty industry—as a makeup artist, esthetician, brand educator, formulator, magazine beauty writer, and industry copywriter for skincare brands. I’ve worked behind the counter, behind the scenes, and behind the keyboard, and if there’s one thing I know for certain, it’s this: beauty is deeply personal, and the industry doesn’t always honor that.

The Authentic Palette is the natural evolution of my work—bringing together everything I’ve learned from decades in skincare and makeup with a modern, inclusive approach to beauty that rejects influencer culture, fear-based marketing, and rigid rules about how we’re “supposed” to look. As I type this, I am growing out a buzzcut and sporting a fading scar from my December brain surgery, in fact, wearing a patterned headwrap.

This space exists for people who are tired of being told they need to fix themselves. No pressure to look younger. No obsession with erasing fine lines. No shaming around aging, weight, or personal style choices. Beauty should feel empowering, not exhausting.

Alongside skincare education grounded in real-world experience and science—not trends or pseudoscience—I focus heavily on color analysis and makeup guidance. My approach to color goes far beyond traditional seasonal systems. Color isn’t just warm vs. cool, or Spring vs. Winter—it’s nuanced, expressive, and unique to each individual. Can I be blunt? The seasonal color analysis systems you see trending all over social media are BS. Total BS. I have certification in the 12 season system and everything I learned is bull-jive as my sister-in-law would say.

That is why I created my unique method of color analysis using decades of expertise. No one is a “season” with me. My undertone-based method embraces the full spectrum of beauty, including people of color, members of the trans and nonbinary community, and anyone who has ever felt unseen by traditional beauty frameworks.

Originally, The Authentic Palette was intended to become a full-time, Zoom & in-person color analysis business once I recovered from my craniotomy. But recovery has a way of clarifying things. When you’re in your 50s—and especially when you’ve faced serious illness—you start listening more closely to what actually brings you joy.

As I am healing, I realized that I don’t want to do in-person color analysis or focus on the wardrobe color aspect. What did remain constant was something that’s been with me for decades: helping people find makeup colors that truly work for them. That realization reshaped The Authentic Palette into the direction it will be heading.

One of my greatest joys—and now my niche—is creating thoughtful, practical makeup shopping guides rooted in color analysis. These guides will take the stress and guesswork out of makeup shopping and focus on real-life application—finding shades that complement your undertones and feel authentically you.

I spent many years writing for beauty magazines providing expert tips on skincare and makeup. Something I was asked to do most often over the years was share advice on how to choose the perfect lip color. For example, in 2012, I had a guide in a seasonal magazine put out by USA TODAY on how to find the perfect red lipstick and that is when I began sharing my advice on the importance of knowing your undertones for makeup selection. My favorite makeup item is lipstick (particularly Revlon Super Lustrous), so you’ll be seeing many Lipstick Guides from me. I know this will bring me joy!

My professional journey in makeup began at 19, selling Mary Kay out of my college dorm room, followed by years working with brands like Lancôme, Clarins, Estée Lauder, Clinique, Laura Mercier, and Prescriptives. I’ve served as a regional educator and makeup artist, written hundreds of beauty articles for print and digital publications (including USA TODAY), and spent years crafting copy for beauty brands you’ve shopped at Sephora and Ulta—sometimes on the packaging itself.

In 2007, I launched my first beauty blog, Chic & Green, which grew into an award-winning platform and later led to my own skincare line, KZM Facial Care Boutique, featured in Martha Stewart Body + Soul and certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny. Over time, my perspective evolved—shaped by motherhood and a brain tumor diagnosis in 2022 that changed how I view time, creativity, and fulfillment.

So many times, writing became my way back to myself — as I recover and get back to ME again. it is so nice to meet you, friends.

The Authentic Palette is where everything converges: experience without ego, education without fear, and beauty without boxes. It’s a place for thoughtful conversations about skincare, makeup, aging, identity, and self-expression—written by someone who has lived the industry and still genuinely loves it.

If you’re looking for honest beauty guidance, inclusive color advice, and help finding makeup that truly feels like you, you’re in the right place.

I’m so glad you’re here.
